Abstract: The overview of the zoogeographical characteristics of the water ecosystems of Bosnia and Herzegovina has been given according to the investigations of the aquatic insect fauna of the orders Trichoptera, Plecoptera, Ephemeroptera and Dipteracarried out during the period 1930-2004. The representatives with the European spreading have been dominated (cca 75%) in the 486 species of the investigated aquatic insect orders. The high percent of the endemic species give the special significance to the fauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially to the fauna of twowinged insects from the family Psychodidae (Krek, 1999.) and to the fauna of the water moths Trichoptera (Marinković, 1981). On the basis of the detailed analysis it could be concluded the aquatic fauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina is characterized with the great diversity of the zoogeographical types. From the biogeographical aspect, it represents one of the center of the origin, and, on the other hand, the existence of the new and old (relict) species of aquatic fauna.
