DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGES AND URBAN RESTRUTURING AS A CONSEQUENCE OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF TOURISM IN SARAJEVO CANTON

The main goal of this paper is to present and analyse the demographic trend and urban changes caused by the development of tourism and the increase in overnight arrivals. Market capitalism brought numerous changes to the society of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The paper connects the current process of urban restructuring of Sarajevo as the capital, the development of tourism and the demographic aging of the population with pronounced depopulation in the old and central part of the city compared to the rest of the Canton. The central city core is increasingly commercialized and population can hardly afford housing in the central city municipalities. The demographic picture, otherwise variable in space and time, indicates a low rate of natural movement, an uneven structure of the population and its predominant concentration in the peripheral municipalities of the canton. The increase in tourist arrivals and investment by investors in new hotels and residential and business complexes around the city center increase the prices of apartments and affect the migration of young people to the outskirts of the city.
